PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Rev. Schneider
God of patience, your people grow weary. We complain and question. We put
you to the test. Our mouths say yes, but our deeds say no.
When we wander off your path, when we fail to follow through
on our good intentions, when we give our attention to trivial
things; gently call us back to you. Empty our hearts of anger
and pride. Empty our souls of greed and selfishness. Empty our
minds of envy, doubt, and mistrust. As you poured out your
very self through your beloved Son, pour your Spirit into our
hearts today. Forgive us our wrongdoing. Reclaim us with your
love. Amen.
(silent personal confession)
WORDS OF ASSURANCE
The One who
created us knows our hearts, inside and out; and still
promises to care for us, even when we turn away.
Thanks be
to God!

Awe arr. Lloyd Larson
Lord, you are
more precious than silver. Lord, you are more costly than
gold. O Lord, you are more beautiful than diamonds, and
nothing I desire compares with you. You are beautiful beyond
description, too marvelous for words; too wonderful for
comprehension, like nothing ever seen or heard. Who can grasp
your infinite wisdom? Who can fathom the depth of your love?
You are beautiful beyond description, majesty enthroned above.
And I stand; I stand in awe of you: holy God, to whom all
praise is due. I stand in awe of you, and nothing I desire
compares with you.

*AN AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
(from New
Zealand) Rev.
Schneider
You, O God,
are supreme and holy. You create our world and give us life.
Your purpose overarches everything we do. You have always been
with us.
You are
God.
You, O God,
are infinitely generous, good beyond all measure. You came to
us before we came to you. You have revealed and proved your
love for us in Jesus Christ, who lived and died and rose
again. You are with us now.
You are
God.
You, O God,
are Holy Spirit. You empower us to be your gospel in the
world. You reconcile and heal; you overcome death.
You are our
God. We worship you.

When I close
my eyes then I can see, when I close my eyes I’m alive, when I
close my eyes then I can see and I am not afraid. When I try
to see the reasons why, if I ever could understand I would
find the hope to let me try and I am not afraid. Take me to
the river, take me to the sea. Climb the highest mountain and
go there with me. When I close my eyes then I can see and I am
not afraid. Now I am learning the magic within me and that is
the reason I’m standing so tall. Deep in my heart is a voice
that is speaking, if I keep believing then I will not fall.
Take me to the river, take me to the sea. Climb the highest
mountain and go there with me. Take me where the wind blows,
take me to the sun. Take me to a river that flows to the sea.
When I try to see the reasons why, if I ever could understand.
I would find the hope to let me try and I am not afraid.

ABOUT THIS MORNING’S MUSIC
PRELUDE:
Corelli (1653-1713) was a prominent Italian violinist and
composer of the Baroque era. The Sonata in D minor, Op. 5,
No. 12 is a set of variations on La Folia, a dance
song first mentioned in Portuguese documents of the late 15th
century. From the last quarter of the 17th century,
numerous composers have written serious art music based on
this early folk tune. These composers include Farinel in 1680,
Bach in 1742, Liszt in 1867, and Rachmaninoff in 1931. Corelli
composed his variations in 1700.
SOLO: From his
home in New York City, Jim Papoulis composes, orchestrates,
and conducts music for dance, film, ensembles, and choirs. His
compositions are known for exploring new modes of musical
communication by connecting classical and traditional forms
with non-Western sounds. He composed When I Close My Eyes
after a trip to China where he participated in a children’s
concert. He writes, “…I have been fortunate to speak with
children of diverse cultures and backgrounds. I have heard
their songs and their silences, and what they have shared has
made me clearly see that in order for a child to feel strength
and to believe in him or her self, it must come from within…”
POSTLUDE: This
concerto is a transcription of Vivaldi’s Concerto in D
minor, Op. 3, No. 11. Bach (1685-1750) made at lease five
organ transcriptions of Vivaldi’s string concertos at the
request of his employer, Prince Johann Ernst of Weimar. The
prince had recently acquired the Vivaldi scores, and it is
usually assumed that Bach transcribed them for organ
performance sometime between 1713 and 1714.
