The
responsibility of the Outreach Commission is to educate the
membership of the church to become more sensitive to the needs
of others and more involved in providing service in the
following ministry work areas:
Hands On-
This area encourages
volunteer service in short term local projects such as
refurbishing an older urban church, installing a kitchen and
painting at IHN Centers, lawn care at Ward Home, etc.
Volunteers in Mission trips to various areas of the country
are also sponsored.
Social
Concerns – Keeps the
church informed in areas of social and justice issues.
Encourages advocacy for positions of the United Methodist
Church.
Missions – This area handles the
subject of missions for the community and world. Included are:
the Alternative Giving Mart, Angel Tree Gifts and SERRV.
Significant funding is provided for worldwide mission and
support of our mission families.
Ecumenical Affairs – With a
direct link to SHIM, provides information of needs, service
opportunities, and special interfaith observances.
Hunger -
Concentrates on the issues of hunger throughout
the community and world. Advocacy of community and worldwide
political hunger issues are promoted. The Northside Allegheny
Feeding Program, Fill-A-Truck and SHIM food collections,
sponsorship of Thanksgiving meals for the needy and the CROP
walk are opportunities for the congregation to become
personally involved. This work area distributes the annual
Thanksgiving offering.
Interfaith Hospitality Network –
Provides housing and meals in the church for the homeless
through IHN and offers opportunities for congregational
involvement.
Health and Welfare – Advocates
health issues within the
congregation and the local community. Support is provided to
those needing help with the health care system. Promotion of a
healthy life style is advocated. Volunteers are needed in
areas of nursing, minor home repair, transportation, etc.
Special Offerings – The congregation
is kept advised of specific local, national and international
needs caused by natural disasters, the spread of disease,
wars, etc. The collection of funds, which provide relief to
effected people, is coordinated through the United Methodist
Committee on Relief.
